After the first betting interval, the flop is dealt. Each player then has five community cards to use to create a poker hand. This is the point when good bluffing skills can come into play, because a weak hand can be improved by betting and forcing weaker hands out of the pot.
During each betting interval, you can say “call” to match the bet of another player or “raise” to increase the amount you want to bet. If you raise, you must remain in the pot until the next betting interval. You can also say “fold” to discard your cards and exit the game. If you fold, you forfeit any bets you’ve made in the current hand.
If more than one player remains in the pot after the final betting interval, a showdown is held where each player reveals their cards and the highest poker hand wins. If the hands are identical, card for card, then they tie.
There are many ways to play poker, and the exact rules vary between games and regions. However, most poker games have the same basic elements: a poker hand comprises five cards, and each card has a value in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency. The most common poker hands are: Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Two Pair, and High Card. Each of these hands has its own strategy for winning, and the higher the hand, the more money it can win.
